Shanghai Tower

Construction of Shanghai Tower has been completed. Design by architecture firm Gensler, it is now China's tallest building and the second-tallest building in the world.

Located in Shanghai's burgeoning Lujiazui financial district, the 632-metre-high skyscraper is 31 metres taller than the previous title holder, the Makkah Royal Clock Tower in Mecca.

The Burj Khalifa in Dubai remains the world's tallest building at 828 metres high.

Shanghai Tower was designed with a curved and twisted form generated through a series of wind-tunnel tests. The unique form is expected to reduce wind load by as much as 24 per cent during typhoons.

It comprises 121 storeys, divided into nine vertical zones that include shops at the base, offices in the centre, and hotels, cultural facilities and observation decks at the top.

Each zone is organised around one of several "sky lobbies" – plant-filled atriums filled with natural light, designed to mimic the social environments traditionally created in town plazas and courtyards.

Shanghai Tower dwarfs other two equally magnificent skyscrapers namely Shanghai World Financial Centre and the Jin Mao Tower.

Construction of the skyscraper was completed at the end of 2015, marking its official entry into the list of the world's top 10 tallest buildings as recorded by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH).

SOHO Hailun Plaza In Shanghai

The 33-storey SOHO Hailun Plaza designed by UNStudio is located at an intersection of 2 metro lines in the dense city of Shanghai. It is consisted of a 130 meters tall office tower with 5 mixed-use podiums. Due to its location at busy transportation routes, the forms of each structure is conceived and shaped by the flow of commuters around the site. The faceted appearance of the facade will look different when approached from different directions.

Twisted Tower

Aedas has won the competition to design one of the towers for the Xuhui Binjian Media City in Shanghai. The block that they will be involved in is 188S-G-1 Tower & Podium site.

This seemingly dynamic, flamboyant and vibrant form derived from a very simple rectangular floor plan at its base which allow for pedestrian circulation around it. In responding to the local building code setback from the nearby subway line, Aedas gradually warps the western wall of the tower away from the setback while the northern wall is twisted to the east to make available a fascinating view of the remaining area of the site. Most of the rest of the entire site will be occupied by DreamWorks Animation.

The three color pixels of a media display inspired the design of the tower's glazing pattern. The faceted window patterns will reflect daylight and turn the entire tower into a vertical diamond mimicking the shimmering nature of a media screen. Several types of curtain wall details were developed to keep construction cost and fabrication time as low as possible.

Shanghai Tower

Shanghai Tower Aerial View

Shanghai Tower located in Shanghai Pudong area will be completed in 2014 standing at 632m tall.

This city is already overpopulated with tall buildings and it is therefore a big challenge for any architect to distinguish his design from the rest. The conventional solution is the race to build the tallest tower in town. Another way is to have a form that is so unusual that it is instantly identified as being special and different. Shanghai Tower possesses both elements which directly makes it the most unique building ever built in Shanghai.
